about

This album brings together 2 works performed live on the dome top of the Pantheon Church, Lisbon.

#1: Book of Hours

"Book of Hours" was recorded live in the remarkable baroque central dome of the National Pantheon/ Ingracia church in Lisbon.

The musicians - as the distributed audience also - stand 40 meters above ground level on a narrow circular balcony looking over the abyss and magnificent geometric rose marble of the floor.
Sound sources include s a crystal bowl, played by João Silva, which was struck and resonated with a stick and fed into Paulo Raposo who processed these sounds and diffused them throughout the space via 6 channels, 4 of which were small self-powered speakers, arranged symmetrically around the circumference of the dome. As special invited, Carlos Santos also moved ,during the performance throughout the space and the audience with a small glass and Tibetan bell.

The sonic interactions in 'Book of Hours' aimed to reveal the inherently active qualities of the space, itself a performer in this acoustic dialog."
The piece was originally released as Part of the Touch Radio and can be listened on British Library as well.

João Silva: crystal bowl
Paulo Raposo: space multi-channel diffusion and real-time processing
Carlos Santos: movement, glass and bell

(original live recording 2008)

#2 The Leaning Tower :

This imrpovised piece follows the spatial exploration of Book of Hours on the cycle/theme - Escuta Profunda /Deep Listening" - invoking and interweaving the acoustic and resonant space of the church as performance. Many meters above the ground and with its prolonged seconds of reverberation, why not let the space itself that very slowly is continuously transformed by spectrally re-recording itself bring forward and interpolate reflecting waves.

João Silva: Crystal Bowl, Harmonium
Paulo Raposo: Electronics
Carlos Santos: Electronics
Eduardo Chagas: Trombone

(original live recording 2013)
