about

This compilation celebrates the 50 years of the Portuguese Revolution.
The carnation day is April 25th, 1974. The day when a dreadful regime collapsed in agony after five decades of a lugubrious dictatorship based on repression of individual and social freedom, censorship, and colonialism.

This was the day poet Sophia Mello Breyner wrote:

This is the dawn I waited for
The new day clean and whole
When we emerge from night and silence
To freely inhabit the substance of time

Under the current threat of rising neo-fascism, some days don't need a name, but others need to have a name, a carnation, so they are not forgotten or can be found again.

Participating artists:
Ajítẹnà Marco Scarassatti, Barbara De Dominicis, Carlos Santos, Fernando Fadigas, Heitor Alvelos, Joana Guerra, Murmer, Paulo Raposo, Philip Petit, Quatroconnection, Yannick Dauby.

Artist notes:

Heitor Alvelos - Expectant
"Three vignettes sourced from AM radio broadcasts, recorded by Francisco Alvelos on the morning of April 25, 1974 - the day of the military upsurge in Portugal that ended 48 years of dictatorship. As the Country awaited news on the outcome of the coup, national radio broadcast light instrumentals, interspersed with military declarations ordering the population to stay indoors. Most edicts have been compiled elsewhere (Touch Radio 122), while the present pieces are based on short segments of the remaining source material - the musical interludes. News traveled slowly and vaguely back in 1974: word of mouth gradually did the rounds that “something” was happening in Lisbon. However, as national TV shut down and radio broadcasts stuck to the cryptic script, the population patiently pieced the puzzle together throughout the day.
Of course tiny remains of the actual music in the present piece: the low fidelity of the original broadcasts, the basic mono recorder used, the sheer age of the cassette tapes and the residual addition of shortwave radio provide further layers of sound that in themselves convey a sense of irredeemable distance. How freaking appropriate, given the global state of affairs in 2024."

Joana Guerra - Pássaros da aurora
"Pássaros da aurora" (dawn birds) is a composition for cello and voice, serving as a tribute to the countless individuals and resistance movements who bravely opposed the Portuguese dictatorship. Here's to the everlasting spirit of April 25th! "

Barbara de Dominicis - Morning happened slowly
An Homage to Resistance. Through the mesmerizing universe of Ana Hatherly, interlaced with Pier Paolo Pasolini's words: "NEVER AGAIN MEANS NEVER AGAIN FOR ANYONE."
A composition by Carlos Santos and Barbara De Dominicis. Barbara dedicates this piece to the liberation of Palestine.

Fernando Fadigas - Revolution_48 (carnation edit)
"48” piece as a magnetic tape continuum loop runs through an installation space presenting his sense of deteriorating nature through the course of a one-month exhibition at Zaratan, Lisbon."

Yannick Dauby - Taipei, Taiwan, 2020.
The day Tsai Ing-Wen (Democratic Progressive Party) was elected as President of Taiwan (R.O.C.), happy crowds gathered in the evening. A group of people from Hong Kong started to congratulate and thank Taiwan, then soon some Taiwanese people cheered them resulting in a friendly moment with passers-by yelling some encouragements for HK and TW. "

Paulo Raposo - Escuto
This audio piece examines the military radio transmissions that took place and were recorded on the night of the Portuguese revolution in April of 1974. Based on archival footage, the piece detaches and extracts, from context, the specific code of voice procedure communications from the information and operational content that occurred during that early morning of April.

Ajítẹnà Marco Scarassatti- And that night I heard a steady light in the middle of the water
"Tromp Kirk Roland, my invented instrument, is here processed along with personal archive recordings.
When there is the 25th of April, in the nights that precede, the freedom always rests and dreams.

Carlos Santos - Freely inhabits the substance of time
The piece uses a modular feedback system and field recordings (a snippet from the 2011 25th April commemorations).
It follows an allegorical sense of ascension, from the dark times of the dictatorship into the light and freedom of democracy, somehow reconnecting with the words of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen's poem."

Philippe Petit - Getting darker
Hopefully, music may speak louder than words...

Murmer- Kreenholm factory: weekday ambiance (with a distant drone)
The kreenholm factory complex was once one of the biggest industrial sites in all of estonia, producing textiles for use all across the soviet union. it began winding down in the 90's, and ceased operations completely across the entire site in 2010. the buildings are not 'ruins' per se, in that they are structurally sound, and protected behind walls, gates, and security, but they are still full of ghosts and memories. this recording documents one of the empty workfloors' possible ambiances: on weekdays there is a persistent machine drone that wafts into the site, possibly from the still-functioning factories just across the river in Russia, which makes the soundscape more active than on weekends.

Quatroconnection - S.E.M.P.R.E.
S.E.M.P.R.E. is Carla Santana’s hommage to the 25th April 1974 revolution in Portugal, where [im]pulses carry through time the sounds of last year's celebration at Avenida da Liberdade in Lisbon.
A daughter of freedom, here to remember to where we shall never return. The way is forward. Sempre."
